Protecting Our Coastal Waters

Pollution threatens Maine’s coast

The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) was forced to close more than 140,000 acres of clam flats in 2004 due to bacterial contamination. Shellfishing contributes $51 million to the state’s economy according to DMR.

During some summers, bacterial contamination has triggered closure of 17 beaches. Swimming in sewage contaminated water can cause viral and bacterial infections.

State investment in wastewater treatment

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) identified 12 towns that desperately need millions of dollars to expand and improve their wastewater treatment plants, including Calais, Ellsworth, Indian Township, Machias, Northport, Searsport and Windham.

By approving a $15 million state bond, Maine will leverage $22 million in additional federal funds—enough for the projects in all 12 towns.

Environment Maine accomplishments

Environment Maine helped preserve our waterways by forcing two of the largest agribusinesses in the state to stop aerial pesticide spraying.

In a win for clean air, Environment Maine convinced the DEP to propose the Cleaner Cars program—a step later approved by their oversight board. The program would put more hybrid and super-clean gasoline cars on the road.
