Efficient buildings on the way?

Maine could have more efficient buildings and reduce global warming pollution by beefing up energy efficiency building codes for homes and businesses. Environment Maine worked with legislators this spring to build support for a bill that would finally update the codes. Efficiency codes are the best way to reduce a building’s energy consumption in Maine, and the state’s Climate Action Plan cites the step as one of the top-ten most cost-effective strategies to reduce emissions.

With heating oil prices increasing, and with citizens across the state unable to afford the escalating costs to heat their home, the bill also protects Maine consumers. Building efficiency standards will lower the expense involved in heating a new home, making ownership more affordable for current and future buyers.
