Save Moosehead Lake Factsheet
Maine’s North Woods Are At A CrossroadsMoosehead Lake is a destination for tens of thousands of outdoors enthusiasts each year who fi sh, camp and hike around its shores, the largest stretch of unbroken wilderness in the East.
Since 1998, 40 percent of Maine’s forest—over 7 million acres — has traded hands, shutting off access to the woodlands, lakes, and trails Mainers have visited for generations.
Plum Creek: Breaking Promises, Buying Silence
Plum Creek Timber Co., an out-of-state real estate giant, has
proposed to carve up the shores of Moosehead Lake with the largest
private development in Maine’s history—including 975 house
lots on thousands of acres, two resorts spanning 3,100 acres and
hundreds of miles of new roads and utility wires.
Plum Creek’s land is zoned for recreation, wildlife habitat and logging; it cannot be developed without the state’s approval.
In an attempt to buy silence in response to its subdivision request in 2005, Plum Creek made 38 grants totaling $203,300 to Maine community groups. In 2004, it made a mere three grants totaling $20,173.
Environment Maine Accomplishments
Environment Maine helped protect our waters by forcing two of the
largest agribusinesses in the state to stop aerial pesticide spraying.
To promote clean energy, Environment Maine passed a bill last year to increase clean energy 10 percent by 2017.
