Background
In
1997, LURC identified the Moosehead Lake region as deserving of special
planning, but never undertook the effort. LURC's decision on Plum
Creek's plan will have serious implications for the future of the North
Woods. A decision to preserve Moosehead Lake would set an important
precedent, proving that Maine's way of life cannot be sold to the
highest bidder.
Environment Maine is calling on the agency charged with protecting the North Woods, the Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC), to deny Plum Creek's request, preserve access for Mainers and visitors, permanently protect the wilderness of Moosehead Lake, and to focus development around existing towns.
